BlackToe Store Manager (Full-Time) - Toronto

ABOUT US

BlackToe Running is Canada's leading run-specialty retailer, blending high quality running footwear, apparel and gear with community-driven experiences and a premium online presence. With thriving stores in Toronto and Ottawa and a dynamic e-commerce business, we're seeking a smart, hands-on Store Manager to lead our in-store experience and drive operational excellence.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Store Manager owns the store - the operations, the environment, and the experience every runner and every staff member has inside it. You ensure the store runs like a well-oiled machine day to day: the shelves are stocked, the team is prepared, and every customer who walks in gets the BlackToe experience, no matter who's on the sales floor. You lead and manage the sales portion of the retail process and partner closely with Inventory Control to keep fulfillment and floor operations in sync. You report to the Senior Manager, Retail Operations, and are the final word on how your store shows up every single day.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Store Environment & Operations - Own the store like it's your home

  • Accountable for a high level execution of daily opening/closing procedures, cash handling, and facilities upkeep.
  • Set and maintain visual merchandising and store presentation standards.
  • Build staff schedules that match customer traffic and business needs.
  • Own basic store financial health inputs: labour scheduling to budget, shrink awareness, and cash controls in partnership with Senior Manager, Retail Operations.
  • Ensure the store is safe, clean, and ready for customers every day it's open.

2. Team Leadership & Development

  • Hire, onboard, and develop sales staff, with support from the Sales Manager.
  • Own the leveling/growth path for staff - know who's ready for more responsibility and coach them to get there.
  • Run regular 1:1s meetings and performance conversations; give direct, real feedback.
  • Build a team culture that reflects the BlackToe Promise, not just enforces rules.

3. Customer Experience Ownership

  • Hold the retail team accountable for the Service Standard: Listen. Assess. Solve. Own It. Follow Through.
  • Step in personally on escalated customer situations and make sure they're resolved, not just handled.
  • Walk (and work) the floor regularly, you should know what the customer experience feels like on any given shift.

4. Cross-Department Collaboration

  • Partner with the Inventory Manager and Inventory Coordinators so that Receiving, Store Transfers, and Fulfillment runs smoothly for your store.
  • Flag and resolve in-store bottlenecks with Inventory Control - a fulfillment delay or receiving backlog affects your customers even though the department reports elsewhere.
  • Make sure online orders and in-store pickups are moving through fulfillment on time, escalating to the Inventory Manager when needed.

5. Business Performance & Reporting

  • Partner with the Inventory Manager on inventory accuracy and shrink for your store.
  • Translate performance data into action: adjust schedules, coaching focus, floor layout, or processes based on what the numbers are telling you with support from the Senior Manager, Retail Operations.
  • Use data: sales, fulfillment times, inventory accuracy, to catch problems before they become patterns.

6. Brand & Culture Stewardship

  • Model the BlackToe brand voice: warm, knowledgeable, direct.
  • Make sure every staff member - inventory or sales - understands they're solving problems, not just selling shoes.
  • Protect the "store as home" feeling for both customers and staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3+ years leading teams in a retail environment, with direct responsibility for coaching, feedback, and performance conversations.
  • Proven ability to train staff on service standards and product knowledge, and to reinforce that training so it shows up consistently on the retail floor.
  • Track record of maintaining high store standards: presentation, service behaviours, and standard operating procedures compliance, even across busy or understaffed periods.
  • Comfortable running regular floor walks, huddles, and role-plays to keep the team sharp on the BlackToe Service Standard.
  • Strong, direct communication style; can give clear expectations, real-time feedback, and coaching that actually changes
  • Experience collaborating with other leaders (Sales Manager, Inventory Manager) to keep customer experience and standards aligned across departments.
  • An avid runner (current or past) with a strong interest in running gear and technology. Must also have a genuine passion and respect for the sport and the community we serve.
